Relocating To A New Home

Relocating can be an exciting or scary endeavor because it involves change and adjustments. One of the key factors to making your relocation a good experience is buying the right home. Considering the following questions can help you make the best decision of which home to buy.

What options for transportation will you have? What is traffic like between the home and your employment? How long will it take to get to work? Would you prefer a smaller home closer to work, or a larger, less expensive home with a long commute?

How friendly are your future neighbors? Do you think you’ll fit in? How easy and quick is it to reach places like gas stations, grocery stores or theaters? Is the crime rate low? Is there an active “Neighborhood Watch” program operating in your area?

If you are thinking about buying a home, are the surrounding homes more or less valuable? If they are significantly more valuable, then they could raise the appraised value of your home when you decide to sell it. (Unfortunately, the higher value may lead to higher property taxes too). Conversely, if the nearby homes are worth less than your home, they can drag its value down too.

Are there disturbing noises or lights such as a streetlamp shining through your bedroom window or a train that passes nearby? What is the quality of the local schools? Do they have programs that interest your children? What about the local churches?

What is your home’s age? How much time and money might you have to spend maintaining and repairing it? Is the yard large enough, or too big?

Unless you like packing boxes and loading trailers, you’ll want to find a place you can live in for as long as needed. Weighing the answers to the above questions before buying a home can help you choose the best place to live when relocating.
