Using Do It Yourself Projects To Your Advantage

by Carrie Harris

It is definitely all the rage now to redo your home or even just a room in your home. TLC is definitely famous for do it yourself shows and teaching you how to redo a room or portion of your home. If you haven’t been bitten by the remodeling but yet, watch out.

One of the major pitfalls with this type of work is not estimating enough money to pay for all of the materials and work involved. Worse yet, these people forget that when they do a remodel, they need to contact their homeowners insurance company, as it raises the value of your home.

Do it yourself projects are one of the biggest reasons people have accidents. If you think about it, many times it involves electrical wiring, and there can be accidents from that. The worst thing however, is that people forget to take into account how much this will raise the value of their home and how it will affect their insurance.

One very important thing to remember when doing work on your home is to make sure you inform your insurance company of the remodel. If you forget, you are not covered for the remodel in case you lose your house to a fire of any other disaster. You are only covered for how it was before it was remodeled.

For home insurance, you want to estimate how much it would cost to rebuild your home. Of course, if it is an older home, you can’t rebuild it like it was, but you can know the value on the home and how much it would cost to rebuild today. When you do an addition or remodel, you need to know exactly how much you spent.

I highly recommend having an adjuster come to your home to take a look at the project you have done and give you an estimate of what the added value on the home is. This will help you to give you insurance agent a more accurate figure.

Just be sure to remember to account for all of the new furniture, lamps, etc. that you purchase for your remodel. If you were to lose them, you would want them replaced by your insurance. The unfortunate thing is, most people forget this very important step.

No one wants to do a remodel and then lose it all with no coverage. Be sure to take these steps to ensuring what you add is covered.
